Let's Talk Cleansers Baby! Skin Wellness Product Series - Part 3

I have been hearing that this series has been really helpful.  And I am glad to hear it. In the first week one of the Skin Product Series, Objections and Concerns, I spoke about the ins and outs of a non-toxic, effective, healthy, skincare regimen, the skin’s microbiome, and frequently asked questions and concerns.

In week two, How to Get Rid of Overwhelm + the Vicious Buying Cycle. I spoke a little about oils why they get a bad rep, but how they are actually good for your skin, when used right. And I even showed you a video of how quick and easy it can be to get in an effective, yet minimal skincare routine.

I also went into detail about how if you are using high-quality ingredients, you only need a few for them to be extremely effective AND teach you how to decode those ingredient labels so that you can make the best choices for your skin.

When you honor the skin-health link and treat your skin both from the inside out and the outside in, you WILL notice a huge difference in not only your skin but your body as a whole. You will have more energy, be happier, possibly lose weight, and be less likely to get sick. Not to mention the beautiful bonus of glowing skin.

This week I am talking about Cleansers baby!!!

Do you ever think back to when you were younger and everything you *thought* you knew about skincare?

Yikes!!!

I don't want to name any brands, but the list of things I was using on my skin was cringe worthy!  Fast forward to what I know now, that way of treating the skin is downright torture!  Think... “How to Ruin Your Skin Starter Pack”!

Why do I prefer oil cleansing over a traditional cleanser???

So many reasons. Let's start with a story. Growing up my skin was CRAZY congested and prone to breakouts. After going to school for esthetics, I was hoping to change that. Still no luck. No matter what I tried, my congestion always came right back after getting a facial and extractions.

Sound familiar?

Enter oil cleansing. I honestly thought there was no f'ing way that I would like it OR that it would be so beneficial for my skin. BUT, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

My skin was WAY more balanced, WAY healthier, WAY clearer and... no more oil slicks;)

That being said, it wasn’t until I added lymphatic stimulation that my skin really started to make changes. BUT we can talk about that another day;) In short... I have been addicted to oil cleansing ever since.  And every client that I have switched over has noticed tremendous results as well!

Why Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) is So Beneficial for Your Skin!

I am really not sure where this comes from, but many of us are taught that oils = comedogenic (meaning they clog pores and produce comedones).

After years of experience and trial and error, this is 100% FALSE!  There are so many oils and there is oil for every skin combination.

OCM is based on the scientific principle that like dissolves like. Oils dissolving oils, to cleanse your face will break down makeup, dirt, and dead skin (all the impactions that happen throughout the day) WITHOUT stripping away moisture and compromising your skin's natural protective barrier.  Even better... they cleanse away even stubborn makeup!

Thinking of traditional foaming or gel cleansers, they typically contain surfactants and detergents that leave your skin squeaky clean and tight. Maybe even itchy.

Sad face :(

Somehow, over the years, we’ve learned to associate that with a 'clean' feeling. What is really sad is that your skin is stripped of its natural oils, throws off the pH of your skin, and messes with your microbiome. This also creates conditions where inhospitable bacteria can thrive.

The result?

Rapidly aging skin, dryness and inflammation.

Say WHAT???

On top of that, oftentimes our skin will overproduce sebum to compensate for the lack of moisture. Which, in turn, can lead to breakouts! And to be honest, many of these cleansers' ingredients can actually make acne worse.

JEEZ!

What needs to happen is BALANCE, hydrated + moisturized (there is a difference!).  When you use cleansers that disrupt your microbiome and dry or dehydrate your skin, there is a battle happening.  A constant yo-yo effect if you will, which is why we then feel the need for numerous products to look vibrant and youthful, when the answer is simple... change your cleanser AND STOP OVER EX-FOLIATING!

To sum it up... oils mimic the natural molecular structure of your skin and bind to all the gunk you need to remove!

“Comforting on both the skin and in the stomach, oils fill us up and protect our hides. We appear more beautiful, our dryness banished and fine lines filled in, the skin’s moisture plumped and protected. The ancients regularly oiled their bodies, as did Cleopatra, that ancient symbol of womanly beauty.” - Susan Parker, author of The Power of the Seed

What Types of Oils are Best to Use for Skincare?

Well, I could do go into detail as I have done my due diligence in research and I could go into detail on which skin types need which type of oils, BUT I have already put some together in a beautiful bottle , already made for you;)

I have spent HOURS researching and each skin is a little different, right?  In my eyes, we are ALL a combination of skin... we just all have different combinations.  However, after doing those many hours of research, I created two different oil cleansers that clients have honestly had great results with. So to make it easy for you, here are the two Oil Cleansers I created.  Both can be used for and are great for sensitive skins.

I also wanted these cleansers to be able to be used
around the eyes for makeup removal. Therefore,
I purposely did not use any essential oils.

Oh and btw…coupled with the bamboo cloth, my skin is incredibly soft after.  I also use the reusable facial rounds to remove any eye makeup, or to "pre-cleanse" as a makeup remover, when needed.

HOW TO PROPERLY USE AN OIL CLEANSER

STEP 1: MASSAGE

With clean hands, use 3 - 4 pumps of oil and massage it around your face, neck and décolleté for 1 - 2 minutes in circular motions.  Use medium pressure (except around eyes - use ring fingers for delicate pressure)

Work all over the face, paying extra attention to congested areas and makeup. There should be enough oil to make your skin slightly slick so you’re able to dissolve makeup and impactions with ease.

Take your time and do a thorough job! It’s a great way to get back to yourself after a long day.

NOTE: You can apply onto a wet, rung-out soft cotton pad, to remove eye makeup prior to cleansing OR for a pre-cleanse for all over.

Apply a warm, steamy towel to the skin and gently wipe away dirt, makeup, and excess oil. Repeat towel compressions on the face, neck, and chest 1-2 more times to stimulate deeper cleansing pathways, relieve muscular tension, and to ensure complete removal.

STEP 2: REMOVE & UNWIND

This has become one of my favorite parts of the day.  It helps me to "wash the day off".

Use a soft, organic cotton or bamboo washcloth and get it wet with warm or lukewarm water. Apply to skin and firmly do some compressions over the cloth.  This feels amazing, stimulates deeper cleansing pathways, relieves muscular tension, and assures complete removal to gently wipe away dirt, makeup, and excess oil.

Be mindful that:

  • The towel is clean!

  • You’re not using excessively hot water!

  • Your towel hasn’t been washed with harsh detergents or strongly scented dryer sheets which can leave a residue and irritate your skin (I use MOLLY"S SUDS non-scented for laundry).

STEP 3: REPEAT (ONLY IF NECESSARY)

Once again, as mentioned in a prior email, if you wear heavy sunscreen or makeup throughout the day, I highly recommend performing a double cleanse.

That's it!  Your skin may have a light layer of oil on it, but it won't feel grimy. It should feel soft and nourished, NOT tight or itchy.

Follow up with a hydrating facial mist (some can be de-hydrating!) and an oil serum (Stay tuned for the next couple of emails for more on these;)

How Often Should I Oil Cleanse?

Without me knowing your skin's needs, this is a hard question to answer.  It really just varies depending on your lifestyle and skin situation.

You can use your oil cleanser AM & PM using the 3 steps above.

Or  you can simply wet a clean cloth (warm is best)  and do your compressions and a gentle wipe, just to liven up your skin. Then continue with the rest of your regimen.

Keep in mind, this is a very different method from what many are used to.  So be patient.  It can take a week or two for your skin to adjust, so don’t give up.  You WILL find what works best for you!

So... now I'm thinking maybe you want to know more about the oil cleansers I have created?
